Cook in the Kitchen

IStock_000002962764XSmallSunday = Cooking Day in our house along with all the other household necessities like laundry, vacuuming and homework (for kids and parents alike).  Today I'm making:

  • Whole Wheat Bread
  • Banana Chocolate Chip Bread
  • Oatmeal Cookies
  • Curried Lentil Soup
  • Roasted Garlic Hummus

Plan of Attack

First thing I get started on cooking day is the bread.  It's amazing how much you can get done in the time it takes the bread to proof – if you have a good plan of attack:

  1. Mix bread starter and knead dough (15 minutes)
  2. Proof bread in oven until doubled in size (30 – 50 minutes)
  3. Get soup on stove while bread proofs (20 minutes)
  4. Clean up after making soup (5 minutes)
  5. Mix banana chocolate chip bread (10 minutes)
  6. Let banana bread rest until bread proofing is done and oven is up to baking temperature
  7. Clean up after making banana bread (5 minutes)
  8. Once bread is doubled in size, punch down, form loaves, set to rise again (1 hour)
Tip: put the covered bread pans on top of the stove to rise while the banana bread and cookies bake.  The heat from the oven and nearby cooking soup will help the bread rise nice and high.
  9. Preheat oven to baking temperature
  10. Bake banana bread (40 minutes)
  11. Make oatmeal cookie dough (10 minutes)
  12. Clean up after making cookie dough (5 minutes)
  13. Remove banana bread from oven and set to cool (5 minutes)
  14. Have a coffee :)
  15. Bake cookies (30 minutes)
  16. Make hummus while baking cookies (15 minutes)
  17. Clean up after making hummus (5 minutes)
  18. Bake bread (40 minutes)
  19. Final clean up of the kitchen and packaging of soup for the week (30 minutes)
