Lovin’ Longo’s Store Renos

Longos-exterior
I started shopping at Longo's about 4 years ago.  Not with any great regularity but every now and then I'd pop in to see what interesting items they had.  Once The Organic Experiment started, I scoured the neighbourhood for stores with good selection plus great prices on organic food and low-and-behold I was impressed with the offering at Longo's.  4 years later, one amazing brand refresh plus an incredibly smart store renovation strategy – Longo's is well on it's way to being a force to be reckoned with in the grocery store and organic market.

The revitalized store format features amazing wood burning pizza ovens, a more open plan for produce, graphics that depict the herritage of Longo's and an instore Starbucks.  Here's a link to a story in Toronto Life on the renovations.

Longos_organic_harvest_sign Of course what really caught my eye was their commitment to expanding the offering of organic products PLUS their competetive pricing.  The current flyer draws big attention to their organics with a two week sale called Organic Harvest by Longo's.  The sale runs from April 1st – 14th and the pricess are very reasonable.

Shopping the Sale
Here are some of my regular purchases throughout the week that happen to be featured in the Organic Harvest sale.  I'd rank these items as a stock up while they are on sale!
Green Organic Frozen Vegetables $2.99 (300 – 500g)
Beretta for Longo's Frozen Lean Organic Ground Beef $2.99/lb
Beretta for Longo's Frozen Whole Organic Chickens $3.99/lb
Various Apples $1.49/lb
Organic Bananas 89 cents/lb

Below are pictures of the new organic produce case and the extensive dried spice rack.

  • Hey their “certified organic” brocolli, carrots and squash all lasted more than a month the brocolli almost 2 before going to seed.. there’s no way that they watch what goes in that store front :/ I have a baby and I try to feed my small family organic as much as possible. I went here thinking I was getting a deal, but I didnt. Maybe I’ll go to planet organic next time. their food is a lot more expensive, but you can COUNT on it being organic.

  • Hi Emma. I’d be pretty shocked if they were not stocking organic when that’s what they are marketing. I’m a big Longo’s fan and they are a very reputable company. That said, I’ll see if I can find any ‘shelf dates’ for organic veggies vs. conventional. One tip I can share is that you do not have to spend the money on organic broccoli – it’s on the clean 15 for veggies you don’t need to spend the big bucks on to avoid pesticides. Conventional broccoli doesn’t retain as many pesticides because the crop faces fewer pest threats, which means it needs less spraying. Search Clean 15 on my blog to see all of the veggies you can skip purchasing organic on :) Thanks again for your comments!!
